For Asian Pacific Heritage Month this May, we recognize the impact Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders have had on not only our industry but America’s history.

From famous architect I.M. Pei, who’s best known for his design of the glass pyramid at the Louvre’s entrance in Paris, to former Fixer Upper star Joanna Gaines, the design and construction industries have benefitted from the important contributions provided by members of the AAPI community. We also acknowledge those who influenced American history and culture, like civil rights activist Yuri Kochiyama and Kamala Harris, the first woman, the first Black American, and the first South Asian American to be elected vice president of the United States.

With May also Military Appreciation Month, we honor the more than 300,000 AAPI veterans who helped defend our nation. Some notable veterans include: Marine Corps Lieutenant Kurt Chew-Een Lee, the first Asian American to serve as a regular officer in the U.S. Marine Corps, and Navy Lieutenant Susan Ahn Cuddy, the first female Asian American naval officer and the service’s first female gunnery officer. These two and many others helped lead the way in the military and beyond.

Take part in recognizing our colleagues, neighbors and customers by exploring different events, exhibitions and videos at the Asian Pacific American Heritage Month website. You can also watch PBS’ documentaries on the history, traditions and culture of the AAPI community or find out more about AAPI veterans at the Library of Congress’ Experiencing War series. For those looking for a new book or activity, check out the Los Angeles Times’ list of recommended books on the experiences of Asian American and Pacific Islanders.

As has become painfully clear, crimes targeting Asian American and Pacific Islanders have increased dramatically since the onset of COVID-19. This month and every month, we stand with the AAPI community and encourage you to use these resources and others as a tool for allyship and to help stop anti-Asian discrimination.

Comment or share any other activities you’re planning to take part in this month or other ways to promote allyship to the AAPI community.
